Welcome to the August Edition of LSERS’ Employer eNews! We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy new school year. Included in this issue is information regarding the Benefit Recipient Verification letter sent to retirees and other benefit recipients 75 years and over.  I encourage you to contact our knowledgeable staff to assist you with any questions or concerns.

Annual Questionnaire on Eliminating Positions is Due October 2nd

Please remember that all school systems including charter schools must complete an annual questionnaire covering the period through the preceding fiscal year regarding elimination of positions through privatizing, outsourcing, contracting the service with a private employer, or any other means.

The Annual Questionnaire is now available online. The information contained within the questionnaire should be certified by the School System Superintendent and returned to LSERS on or before October 2, 2017.

Benefit Recipient Verification Letter

LSERS recently mailed the “Benefit Recipient Verification Letter” to several thousand retirees and other benefit recipients. Since then we have received a high volume of phone calls regarding the letter.

By law, LSERS must properly operate and administer its public pension plan.  To do that, LSERS, periodically, must verify that its records are current and accurate.  As part of that process, on Friday, August 11, 2017, LSERS mailed approximately 5,200 Benefit Recipient Verification letters to retirees, beneficiaries and survivors aged 75 and older who are currently receiving benefits.  The purpose of the form is to simply confirm that the benefit recipient’s contact information is current and that he or she is receiving their benefits.  The form must be completed, including two witnesses, and returned by September 11, 2017 to avoid interruption of benefits.  Completed forms can be returned by emailing webmaster@lsers.net, by faxing to 225.922.1001 or by sending through regular mail.

New Salary Contributions Reporting and Corrections Form

LSERS' new online Salary Contribution Reporting and Corrections Form has been available on LSERS' website since August 1. This new form replaces three archived forms:

  1. Contribution Corrections Form,
  2. Salary Uploads Form, and
  3. Salary Contributions Form.

You can find the new form webinar and the procedures on LSERS.net.

We have received valuable feedback from our employers. Two enhancement changes have been made to this form based on your input.

  1. The “Insurance and Retirement Uploads” form is for uploading monthly insurance files and the annual retirement (RET) salary data file. A message has been added in hopes to alleviate any misunderstandings.  The message explains, “This is NOT Monthly Salary Contribution Reporting. For the page used to submit Salary Contributions, click here.”  
  2. On the new salary contribution reporting and corrections form, we replaced the wording “To Send File to LSERS” with “Preview File”. This feature allows you to preview the data to be submitted and to make any additional changes prior to submitting.  To clarify, a reminder message has been added which indicates, “To complete submission, click the Submit button on the next screen.”

Fact Sheet 17 – Survivor Benefits has been revised to include:
  1. In the Child Survivor Eligibility section, corrected link to the recently revised Form 12C Physician Report of Disability
  2. In Student Recertification section, corrected title of Form 13B to Student Educational and Marital Certification
  3. In Spouse Recertification section, additional clarification was added for those with a first state service date on or after 7/1/2010.
