Louisiana School Employees' Retirement System Archived Social Security Fairness Act Signed into Law

Social Security Fairness Act Signed into Law

On January 5, 2025, President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act, eliminating reductions in Social Security benefits caused by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The provisions, which had been in effect for nearly forty years, reduced Social Security payments for millions of retirees, including numerous beneficiaries of the Louisiana School Employees’ Retirement System.

With the repeal, and LSERS members who receive Social Security benefits that are reduced due to WEP or GPO will receive increased Social Security benefits retroactive back to January 2024 payments.

The Social Security Administration will manage the implementation of these changes. For specific inquiries about the bill’s implementation, timing, and its impact on individual benefits, please contact the Social Security Administration. For more details, we suggest visiting www.ssa.gov.
